Exeter is our nearest City and is a good place to visit. It has the River Exe flowing through it and also the large boat canal allowing navigation into the city marina. It also has remaining Roman city walls, a good park and ride, a lovely cathedral and a university vibe with appropriate coffee bars and eateries.

Exeter Ship Canal was opened in 1566, built to bypass weirs that had been erected on the River Exe and thus enable goods to reach the port of Exeter—originally in barges, later in ocean-going ships. The canal is 5 miles long and the advantage to the city is not just the leisure facilities but also the creation of many walks and cycle routes from the city centre along the river and canal to the sea at Exmouth and Dawlish Warren.
